Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by captain Stokes about the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had allowed his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "weak men" comment after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to stay in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the guidance from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's wicket late on Saturday came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need four wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage after three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're staring down the barrel at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it like that," he continued.

"It's been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was inevitably hard touring here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise externally. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," he concluded.
