No fewer than thirteen people perish and 98 hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the country's president.

The official announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his government's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to stimulate the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that government.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all such projects.

This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these vital undertakings.
